Richard's story
Principal UI Engineer
Hired by Skava

What’s your background? Career aspirations?

I’m a mechanical engineer by degree and a software engineer by practice (33 years and counting).  I’ve spent nearly my entire career building user interfaces with all sorts of technologies and platforms. After I lost my job in January 2018, I spent time learning Vue and refining my JavaScript skills. My passion is building user interfaces, regardless of the technology.

What triggered your job search? What drew you to Seen?

My last real interview experience was nearly 13 years ago, so I was totally unprepared for the new testing only interview process. I realized I needed to try other avenues. About this same time, I was invited to the beta of Seen. I was hooked up a technical coach (Emma, a great coach by the way) and things were looking good for a change. Long story short, I was given an offer to work for an awesome team of people and I took it. Not only that, but I was able to land another remote job, with a better title and pay.

How did Seen ease your job search?

I tried recruiting firms and searching job boards and newsletters before and after joining Seen. I think the thing I like the best is the technical coach. Having someone who is there to listen to your job search struggles and provide feedback is awesome.

What excites you most about your new role?

Awesome group of people and an interesting project.

Tips for fellow tech job seekers?

Never give up and always explore multiple options when searching for a job.
