Datalex has an opening for a senior position working within a global team of Database Engineers reporting into the Data Team lead
The database team provides Datalex with a world class database infrastructure. We are a key team within the company working closely with different internal and external teams - providing consultancy on database technologies. The work is varied and interesting requiring the team to use all their software engineering skills. The database environments are true 24x7 operational and are critical to our customers’ businesses. There is an engineering approach to everything that we do – this is ultimately a software engineering role with a focus on database technology. The team is currently migrating to a cloud focused strategy harnessing the huge benefits of cloud technology.

Who this role would suit?
This is a role for someone with a deep interest in IT and software engineering. The team is highly technical and a critical cog in getting working solutions out to customers, with the aim of always automating all of our implementations. Self-learning is important; we are looking for someone who is willing to learn, wants to work as part of a team, and has a can-do attitude. This role will be based in our Dublin office.
Determine the best database technologies to support the business objectives and develop the appropriate software engineering solutions - using all technologies, not just database
Project Management of the roll-out of database solutions. Manage all the elements required to deliver best practice database solutions of real benefit to Datalex and our customers.
Provide consultancy to the business on database technologies.
Be part of a 24x7 operation to minimize the impact of system outages to customers and so may be required to provide evening, night and/or weekend support. However, we pride ourselves on providing a good work/life balance.
Provide general Database Administration support - e.g. maintenance tasks, installations, backup and recovery, performance testing, tuning and optimizations.
Will be required to develop SQL, PLSQL and general scripting (e.g. Korn, Python) to support customer DB solutions.
Automate cloud deployments & upgrades, via technologies like SaltStack, AWS Cloud formation templates, etc
Responsible for providing detailed and accurate estimates for Database work required as part of project work.
Essential Skills and Experience
Must have existing eligibility to work in the Republic of Ireland.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience working in a challenging technical environment.
Minimum of 4 years’ Oracle database experience.
Experience in Capacity Planning and detailed knowledge of ALL backup and recovery strategies (including OS solutions).
Experience as an Oracle DBA in a Development and Customer Support capacity as well as project implementations.
Experience working with SQL, PLSQL stored procedures, triggers as well as performance tuning, optimizations and writing PL/SQL scripts.
Scripting and software engineering skills to include but not limited to Korn shell scripting, configuration management skills (GIT), testing skills.
Project Management skills, you will fully manage the rollout of database solutions.
Experience in code migration, database change management and data management through the various stages of the development life cycle.
Proven ability to perform both Oracle and operating system performance tuning and monitoring.
IT degree or equivalent professional qualification.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, fluent in English.
Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities, managing multiple projects and deadlines.
Thorough knowledge of database and propriety software applications, as well as issues relating to installing and managing complex applications in multiple environments.
Good working knowledge of multiple OS platforms and Technologies (Linux experience essential)
Clustering – OS/DB level, High Availability – RAC experience especially desirable.
Oracle PLSQL, SQL, DB design concepts
Extensive experience in both Oracle and OS performance tuning and monitoring as well as Physical Database Design.
An understanding of architectural concepts and in formulating solution designs for presentation to other colleagues.
Desirable Skills and Experience
Cloud experience (AWS preferable)
Oracle Certified Professional (11g or higher)
Experience of MongoDB or other database technologies.
Oracle Database Features – for example, having Database Partitioning and Goldengate experience
Knowledge of other DBMSs and other IT technologies (e.g. JAVA)
Not necessary, however it would be a distinct advantage to have experience with SaltStack, or AWS Cloud formation templates.
