The Sr. Data Engineer/DBA will work within VSL System Engineering closely with the development team to automate deployments and will also be strategically focused on ensuring the high availability, configuration consistency, scheduled maintenance and consistent performance of the production and non production MS SQL Server environments as well as producing the appropriate levels of reporting, data models, data analysis, technical solutions, database design, database development and other data related tasks in support of the VSL Software Development team while using current best practices, automation and leveraging any appropriate frameworks where possible.

The Sr. Data Engineer/DBA RDBMS database systems with specific focus on Microsoft SQL Server versions 2014+. The Sr. Data Engineer/DBA will have both technical and communication skills as well as desire to be a subject matter expert on the data team.

Essential Job Functions:

As the primary DBA, manage and administer all production and non-production database environments to ensure proper maintenance and execution, including (but not limited to):
Design and configuration of the hardware and software for production and non-production environments
Monitoring of production and non production database environments, sql agent jobs, data feeds and reporting servers
Proficient with SQL Clustering, Always On Availability Groups, and the Windows Server Failover
Using MS T-SQL tools and technologies to create, tune, and optimize stored procedures, indexes, tables, views, triggers, functions, and constraints
Database storage utilization and allocation planning and forecasting
MSSQL SQL Server instance installation, upgrade, patch, configuration, backup, and maintenance
On call after-hours support for production support, software application deployments and scheduled maintenance as required
Cross-train other members of the data team on essential DBA functions and best practices
Determine, enforce, and document database policies, procedures and standards
Assist in the design, development, implementation, testing, evolution, and maintenance of logical and physical data models for all application products in the portfolio and for new products under development
Analyze data and solve complex business problems using Microsoft T-SQL tools and technologies and other tools and technologies as required
Serve as the subject matter expert for the data environment and develop a deep technical knowledge of all existing databases environments. Have a thorough understanding of how they interact with applications
Assist in the design, development, testing, and evolution of proprietary ETL tools to support external and internal customers
Work with management and team members to identify tasks and schedules to meet project deadlines
Conduct iterative performance tuning of database environments, ETL processes, and SQL queries as needed
Pro-actively seeks and acquires technical training, vocational training and market and product awareness such that skills remain current and relevant to VSL System Engineering
Provide technical guidance to the software development team
Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Job Functions :

Assist in the formulation of standards, policies, and procedures relating to database management and data governance
Create and maintain documentation for databases and data objects, including data dictionaries, processes, and procedures, to facilitate product development and maintenance
Develop and foster a customer service mentality when dealing with internal and external customers
Evaluate and implement new database tools and technologies as well as provide assessments to management
Assist in the design and implementation of database security policies and integrity controls
Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree and/or progressively responsible professional work experience strongly preferred
8-10+ years of experience with relational databases and possess advanced skills in Microsoft SQL Server tools and technologies including T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS, SSDT
Self-starter requiring minimum supervision with desire to take on subject matter expert role in the organization
Expertise in administering MS SQL Server databases. (MSSQL 2014+) with HA Mirroring, Replication
Expertise in creating, tuning, and maintaining SQL scripts, stored procedures, triggers, and functions and other database objects and executables. Including the use of dynamic SQL
Experience in performing complex data analysis and subsequently developing solutions
Experience in working with real-time, data-driven, software and web applications
Experience in working in a software development environment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Administration and Configuration of MSSQL Availability Groups
Automation experience for day to day tasks required
Powershell scripting

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Data Platform certification
Familiarity with one or more of the following tools: Spotlight, LiteSpeed, GIT, SVN, and Embarcadero ER Studio
Familiarity with data XML and related APIs
Familiarity with Microsoft VBA for Applications and .net CLR, SSIS, DTS packages
Familiarity with Agile methodology
Powershell Sql Server automation experience
Public Cloud experience with AWS, GCP or Azure
Experience with Mysql, Aurora, Elasticsearch is desirable
