The Harris Photonics and Quantum Sciences Core Technology Center is an industry leader in high-reliability, high-performance, optical and photonic systems supporting today's military, government, and commercial customers. It is a group of over 100 highly dedicated and skilled scientist, engineers and technicians with a mission to invent, develop and deliver superior optical and photonics technologies. This group supports, enhances, and extends Harris’ core communications business through research and innovations. The Photonic and Quantum Sciences Core Technology Center provides solutions for digital lightwave communications, coherent RF Photonics, photonic integration, optical and fiber optic sensing systems and acousto-optic beam steering, delivery and modulation.
Due to substantial growth in our business Harris has an immediate need for an Optical Engineer. This role is a key position that requires supporting ongoing product development and delivery. We are seeking experienced candidates in the photonics industry who can provide technical insight for our existing technologies and develop new technologies to capture and lead new programs with our military, government, and commercial customers.
Work with or as a technical leader on Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and ensure successful outcome through program milestones.
Serve as a photonic subject matter expert on existing programs.
Work with a team of experts and support existing business product development efforts in a wide array of business areas and technologies.
Lead architecture development for advanced optical communication systems focused on the physical layer.
Participate in the Photonics and Quantum sciences Core Technology Center to identify and pursue new business opportunities
Present business development plans and product concepts to senior management and potential customers
Author white papers, travel to customer locations to present technical concepts and present at conferences
MS degree 4+ years of experience in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field.
PhD degree 2+ years of experience in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field.
Active TS/SCI or TS/SSBI security clearance required.
Desired Technical Abilities:
Background in at least one of the following technical application areas:
(1). Digital Lightwave Communications: Physical layer systems, components and modules for optical communication systems.
(2). Coherent RF Photonics: Transport and processing of analog signals (radar, wireless communications, etc.) on optical carriers.
(3). Fiber Optic Sensing: Utilize fiber optics to sense physical changes via interaction with a structure in or attached to the fiber (i.e., FBG, Fabry-Perot Cavity) or changes directly to the fiber itself (i.e., Brillouin Scattering).
(4). Photonic Integration: Improving SWaP for photonics systems utilizing integrated circuit manufacturing technologies.
(5). Acousto-Optics Devices: Utilize Acousto-Optic devices for beam delivery, steering and modulation for semiconductor industry, quantum computing and laser systems.
Design and integrate photonic components and systems.
Develop test plans and perform system level testing of photonics systems.
Transition lab based prototypes to fielded operational systems.
Utilize software tools (MATLAB, OptSim, BeamProp) to develop models and designs for photonic systems.
Preferred Additional Skills:
10+ Years of experience in R&D inventing, developing and implementing new products.
Experience leading teams to define and document approved design specifications from concept through delivery of a fielded system or commercialization.
Experience with the process of searching, evaluating, and filing patents.
Demonstrated ability to secure customer funding for advanced photonic systems.
Demonstrated ability to invent new techniques, products and processes.
